Vietnam Children’s paintings auctioned to raise funds for disadvantaged

Children’s paintings are on the auction block in an exhibition this week at the ongoing Hue Festival 2008 in Viet Nam’s former imperial capital.
Out of 18,000 submissions, 2,008 paintings by children nationwide were selected for the exhibition.

"The 2,008 paintings will be sold at a starting price of US$20.08 each," exhibition organiser Nguyen Le My Hoan said.

"Proceeds from the auction will go to help 28 disadvantaged children in need of heart surgeries," Hoan said.

Hoan, a staff writer of Chuong Gio (Wind Chimes) magazine, and her friends started the project last year by calling on school children and children living at shelters to paint their dreams.

"I was deeply moved from the large number of paintings. And I discovered that there’re many children with artistic talents," she said.

The diversity of children’s dreams is evident in the collection. While a prominent theme of many urban children’s paintings was people behind the wheel of cars, toys, or airplanes, compositions by children from the countryside feature trees bearing fruit and streams swarming with fish in their villages.

One painting by a nine-year-old girl at Thao Dan shelter in Hcm city depicts children in the arms of their mothers. Another by an eight-year-old orphan shows children at play with their parents in a park.

Hoan plans to initiate many more projects to raise funds for poor children because heart conditions affect thousands of disadvantaged children in the country.

"Expenditures for heart surgeries are beyond the reach of their families," she said.

The exhibition opened at February 3 Park in front of Hue’s Teachers’ College on Wednesday, and will last until next Monday.
