A VND19.6 trillion (US$1.23 billion) project to build a North-South express sea route using specialised vessels has been submitted to the Government for approval.
The sea route for cargo, and passenger transport was proposed by the Viet nam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin).
The route would use six large ferries (ofen known as Ro-Pax) designed to carry wheeled vehicles and passengers. They will be built over four years, beginning from later this year to 2011.
In the first phase, Vinashin said it would buy several vessels from Italy so that it could learn about that country's experiences in operating passenger and cargo ships.
The remaining vessels will be built at local shipyards.
Capital for the project will be raised from bond issuance (51 per cent), loans (42 per cent) and available resources (7 percent).
Once completed, two large ships that can house 2,700 passengers and 900 vehicles each will be running on a long-distance route from Hon Gai Town in the northern coastal province of Quang Ninh to Hcm city
Four smaller-sized vessels with a capacity of 1,000 passengers and 600 vehicles each will service the Hon Gai-Chan May and Chan May-HCM City routes.
Late last year, Vinashin bought an Italian-made vessel named Hoa Sen for 60 million euros for a trial weekly service on the north-south express sea route.
The vessel, which can accommodate 630 passengers, 100 cars and 153 container trucks departs from Quang Ninh's Cai Lan port to Chan May port in the central province of Thua Thien Hue and Nha Rong Wharf in HCM City.
